The Potato Palace

The Steel Yard, a famous community NGO Located in Providence, Rhode Island has decided to expand their public art education campus north onto the site of the beloved Potato Palace. The Potato Palace is a 5,000 sf 1880’s era industrial building that has been used to receive, process, store, and ship potatoes through most of its history. Now it is being adapted and reused as a new multi-use gallery, artist-in-residence studios, and rental spaces. The building will be restructured internally with a new wood frame system, feature many new efficiency system upgrades including solar PV on the roof, completely new building core of common spaces including restrooms, and an elevator. Creative features that will tie the Palace to The Steel Yard campus will include an adjacent community orientation plaza with native plantings, a welded art seating pavilion and gateway, and numerous artistic metal details inside and outside of the building.
